Sleepwalking is a sleep disorder whereby the individual affected by a condition of this type gets up in the middle of the night while still in a state of sleep and moves around. This can be particularly troublesome as the individual may harm himself while in a sleepwalking state.
As many speculate about the causes of sleepwalking, there is no concrete evidence which shows why individuals sleepwalk. Some have pointed in the direction of psychological issues which may provide the impetus for sleepwalking. Although primarily a childhood sleep disorder, sleepwalking occurs in individuals of all ages.
The main symptom of sleepwalking is the moving around while still in a stage of sleep. Although individuals mainly walk around while sleepwalking, people with this type of disorder may even go downstairs, fix themselves a snack and go back to bed, all while in a sleeping state
The main reason for wanting a treatment for a sleep disorder of this type is so that the individual may prevent any possible injury from occurring, such as running into furniture or falling down the stairs, for example. The main treatment for a sleep disorder of this type is to simply take some precautions which may prevent minor injuries while in the state of sleepwalking. Things like moving furniture to the side and locking doors and windows may help prevent any injuries from occurring should the individual sleepwalk. Medications are only really prescribed in events where there are violent or disruptive episodes involved along with the sleepwalking.
Sleepwalking is a condition that may in fact go away on its own and if the individual does not cause harm to himself or others, there may be no real need to worry too much about a sleep disorder of this type. Should the individual feel it necessary, a medical consult with one’s doctor may be initiated.
